Labastida, in Alavesa, produces excellent young wines and classic expressions of the tempranillo and garnacha grapes. Fernandez-Gomez is 90% tempranillo and 10% garnacha, while El Primavera is 100% tempranillo. Both wines are aged in French and American oak for 8-10 months.
This family-run winery was founded in 1992, which was the first year it released its young red wines on the market. Located in Labastida's Jewish Quarter (Rioja Alavesa), its facilities consist of four houses, two of which are among the oldest in the town. Underneath these houses is a curious network of caves that dates back to 1200. These caves are ideally suited for storing young wines (in concrete tanks) and ageing vintage wines, since there are no temperature changes or noise, and the degree of humidity remains constant all year long.
The art of viticulture was passed down to us from our forefathers, and our generation has taken the next step: for the past 10 years, we have been engaged in both winegrowing and winemaking. We use the grapes from our own vineyards, which are located throughout Labastida, with a production output that we endeavour to keep below 6,000 kilos per hectare. Our own vineyards cover 20 hectares and currently produce the following grape varieties: Tempranillo 60 %, Garnacho 15 %, Viura 10 %, Grenache White 5 %, Malvasia 5 %, Graciano 5%.
